How much does SEO cost in India in 2026?

Quick answer

Most small businesses in India pay somewhere between Rs 10,000 and Rs 30,000 a month for SEO, while online stores and national B2B firms usually pay more. Our own retainers start from Rs 12,000 a month, and overseas plans are $800 or $1,600. Judge any quote by the enquiries it brings in, not by keyword positions.

Ask ten agencies about SEO cost in India and you'll get ten different numbers. People forward us these quotes all the time, and a typical pair looks something like this: one cheap proposal promising "50 keywords on page one", one that costs ten times as much and comes with a forty-slide deck. The owner wants to know which one is lying. Usually neither, exactly. They're selling very different things under the same three letters.

So here's our honest version: what different businesses tend to pay, what a fair package includes and how to tell whether the money is coming back. We sell SEO ourselves, so read it with that in mind.

What is the average SEO cost in India per month?

For a single-branch local business, most quotes we see land between Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000 a month. Bigger businesses pay more, and some go well past a lakh. These ranges come from quotes clients forward to us, not a survey, so treat them as a rough map.

Business type What we typically see in quotes (per month) What decides where you land
Local shop, clinic or one-branch service business Rs 10,000 to 25,000 One Google Business Profile, 5 to 15 service pages, customers within a few kilometres
Multi-location business (3 to 10 branches) Rs 25,000 to 60,000 A profile and a page for each branch, reviews at every location, more old listings to clean
Ecommerce store Rs 30,000 to 1 lakh or more Category and product pages, filter URLs, duplicate content, product descriptions copied from the brand
National B2B (manufacturer, exporter, software firm) Rs 40,000 to 1.5 lakh Hard national keywords, long technical content, industry links, a sales cycle measured in months

Where do we sit? Our SEO retainers start from Rs 12,000 a month, and most of our local clients end up between that and Rs 40,000. Online stores and national B2B we quote after seeing the site. For businesses in Australia, the UK, the USA or the UAE, our SEO Starter plan is $800 a month and SEO Growth is $1,600. Both are on our pricing page.

What pushes SEO charges per month up or down?

Competition, mostly. A dentist in Satellite is fighting a dozen other clinics within two kilometres. A pharma packaging machine maker might have four real competitors nationally, each publishing for ten years.

Then there's the state of your website. If it takes eight seconds to load on a Jio 4G phone and half its pages are missing from Google, the first two months go on repairs, and that shows up in the price.

Writing is the other big lever. Four researched pages a month cost more than one blog post, and they should. Ask how many pages a month the quote covers. If the answer is vague, so is the work.

Freelancer, agency or in-house: which costs less?

On paper a freelancer is cheapest. In practice it depends on how much of the work needs a developer, and how you'd cope if that one person left.

Freelancer Agency In-house SEO hire
Typical monthly cost Rs 5,000 to 20,000 From Rs 12,000 with us; varies widely elsewhere Rs 25,000 to 50,000 salary, plus tools
Paid SEO tools Sometimes Usually included You pay separately
Website code fixes Rarely Depends on whether they have developers Needs a developer
If the person leaves or falls ill Work stops Team carries on Work stops until you rehire
Suits One-off jobs, a profile cleanup Most small and mid-sized firms Large sites publishing every week

A good freelancer can be excellent. The catch is usually code: plenty of them find the problems and hand you a list for your web developer, who may never get round to it. Publishing twenty pages a month? Hire in-house.

How much does a one-off SEO audit cost?

Anything from free to Rs 50,000 or more, depending on who does it and how deep they go. An automated tool report costs next to nothing (ours is free) and is a fair starting point, but it can't judge strategy. A proper manual audit of a small business site, from the quotes we see, tends to run Rs 5,000 to 20,000. A large ecommerce site with thousands of URLs costs more.

Our first audit is free: a crawl, indexing checks in Search Console, a speed test on a real phone, a look at your Business Profile and a written list of problems, worst first. Keep it even if you never hire us. For a big store that needs a deeper standalone audit, we'll quote after a quick look.

What should a monthly SEO package include?

A fair retainer is mostly labour, so you should be able to see what that labour is. Here's what we'd expect to see written into any proposal, ours included:

  • an audit and keyword map at the start, with each money keyword given its own page
  • technical fixes (speed, indexing, redirects, schema), and a clear answer on who actually makes them
  • on-page work on titles, headings, internal links and FAQs
  • a stated number of new or rewritten pages each month
  • Google Business Profile and listing cleanup if you serve local customers
  • links from real places like associations, suppliers and local press
  • call, WhatsApp and form tracking set up in your own accounts
  • a monthly report that starts with enquiries

What usually isn't included: a full website redesign, your Google Ads spend, product photography, and writing beyond the agreed number of pages. None of that is a trick; it just needs saying up front. Our SEO services page lists exactly what sits inside our retainers.

Why are Rs 3,000 to 5,000 SEO packages risky?

Because the sums don't work. A decent SEO executive in India earns somewhere around Rs 25,000 to 50,000 a month, so Rs 4,000 buys a few hours of real time, shared between research, writing, fixes and a report. Something has to give, and it's usually the actual SEO.

What you tend to get instead is an automated report, a few spun articles and a pile of bought links from sites nobody visits. For a while the graph might even go up. Then a Google spam update arrives and the site drops, sometimes for months. We've been called in to clean up after these packages more than once, and the cleanup always costs more than the retainer did.

Is every cheap provider a crook? No. But at that price there isn't time to do the job, however good the intentions.

What red flags should you watch for in an SEO proposal?

Guaranteed rankings top the list. Google itself says nobody can guarantee a number one spot, so "page one in 30 days" means very easy keywords or a broken promise. Ask which keywords.

A few others we see often:

  • Link packages ("200 high DA backlinks a month"). Real links are earned one at a time.
  • Annual lock-ins or a year paid up front. Our retainers run month to month, and a confident agency shouldn't need to trap you.
  • Your Search Console, GA4 or Business Profile set up in the agency's name instead of yours.
  • Reports that only show rankings, often for long phrases nobody types.
  • "Secret methods" they won't explain.

There are no secrets. There's just work, done every month.

How long before SEO shows results?

For local searches, you'll usually notice movement in 2 to 3 months and steadier leads somewhere around months 4 to 6. National keywords with real competition take 6 to 12 months, sometimes longer. A brand-new website starts further back than an old one with a clean history.

My advice is to budget six months in your head before you judge it, even if the contract is month to month. Judging SEO at week six is like judging a gym membership after two visits.

How do you judge whether SEO is worth the money?

Count leads, not rankings. Before any work starts, set up call tracking, WhatsApp click tracking and GA4 conversions for form fills, all inside your own accounts. Then every month you can see how many enquiries came from Google, whatever position some keyword happens to be in.

A simple way to think about it. Say you run a physiotherapy clinic and an average new patient is worth about Rs 6,000 to you over their treatment. A Rs 15,000 retainer pays for itself with three extra patients a month from search. Still getting one after six months? Ask why. Getting ten? It's working, even if the ranking report looks boring.

One more thing to watch now: more people are asking ChatGPT and Google's AI answers who to call. We fold that work into normal SEO rather than selling it separately, and our guide to AI search optimisation in India explains what it involves.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost per month in India?+

For most small businesses it's somewhere around Rs 10,000 to 30,000 a month, going by the quotes we see. Multi-branch firms, online stores and national B2B companies usually pay more. Our own retainers start from Rs 12,000 a month, and we quote after a free audit so the deliverables are written down before you pay anything.

Is Rs 5,000 a month enough for SEO?+

Rarely, I'm afraid. At that price there are only a few hours of real work in the month, so packages tend to lean on automated reports and bought links. If your budget is tight, a better use of it is a one-off audit plus a fixed list of repairs, then a proper retainer once you can afford it.

What does local SEO cost for a small business?+

Usually the lower end of the range, because it's one area and one Business Profile. Most local retainers we see sit between Rs 10,000 and 25,000 a month, and ours start from Rs 12,000. The work is mainly your profile, reviews, listings and a handful of service pages. Our local SEO services page has the detail.

Do SEO packages in India include content writing?+

Good ones do, but check the number. Ask how many new or rewritten pages each month the price covers, who writes them and if you get to approve them before they go live. "Content as required" in a proposal usually means very little content. We put the page count in writing.

Can I pay for SEO once instead of every month?+

Partly. A one-off audit and fix project works well for a small site that's mostly fine but has a few technical problems. What you can't do once is the ongoing part: new pages, reviews, links and keeping up with competitors who don't stop. That's why most SEO is sold as a monthly retainer.

Do SEO agencies guarantee first-page rankings?+

The honest ones don't. Nobody controls Google's results, and Google says so itself. What an agency can promise is the work: agreed deliverables every month and a report you can check against your own Search Console. If someone guarantees page one, ask for the keyword list and the refund terms in writing.

Is AI search optimisation charged separately?+

Not with us; it's inside every SEO retainer, because it rests on the same groundwork as normal SEO. If an agency sells AEO or GEO as a separate package, have a close look at what's actually in it.
