How the free SEO audit works

  1. Paste your URL and press start. Any public website works, yours or a competitor's (I'd run both, honestly).
  2. The tool reads your robots.txt first. It picks up any Sitemap lines in there, tries about 16 common sitemap paths in case yours lives somewhere odd, and checks whether you have an /llms.txt file.
  3. Then the crawl starts. It follows internal links level by level from the homepage, up to 500 pages by default. In the settings you can raise that to 2,000 pages, limit the depth, add a delay between requests, or give it a custom sitemap URL or user agent.
  4. You watch it work. There's a screenshot of the site, a count of pages found, the time elapsed and a stage tracker that moves from fetching and parsing through links, schema, security and PageSpeed to scoring the report. Two small cards show what it found for the sitemap and llms.txt.
  5. Read the reports. You get 28 of them in five groups. Start on the Dashboard, then open whatever worries you most.
  6. Export it. Download everything as an XLSX workbook with one sheet per report, or a ZIP of CSV files, and hand it to your developer.
  7. Ask us to look, if you want. You can send the results to our team and book a free review call. Nothing reaches us unless you choose to send it.

What the audit checks

Overview of the whole site The Dashboard gives you the summary. Next to it sit Site Information, a Site Tree of your folder structure, and Crawl Statistics. ### Titles, descriptions and headings Page Titles, Meta Descriptions and Headings each get their own report. This is where most sites lose easy marks. Missing titles, one description copied across twenty pages, two H1s fighting each other. ### Content, duplicates and keywords Content Analysis and Duplicate Content flag pages that say the same thing. Top Keywords lists the words your site uses most. All URLs puts every page in one table. ### Links, redirects and orphan pages All Links and Anchor Text show how your pages connect. Broken Links catches dead ones, Orphan Pages finds pages nothing links to, and Redirect Chains shows where a click bounces twice before landing. ### Images and URL structure The Images report lists the images found across your pages in one place. URL Structure checks how your addresses are built. ### Directives, canonicals and hreflang Directives, Canonical Audit, robots.txt and Hreflang cover the instructions you give search engines. One stray noindex tag can hide a page for months. ### Structured data and Open Graph Structured Data shows the schema on each page. Open Graph shows what a link looks like when someone shares it on WhatsApp. ### Security headers, graded A to F Six headers get graded: HSTS, CSP, X-Frame-Options, X-Content-Type-Options, Referrer-Policy and Permissions-Policy. It also checks HTTPS and mixed content. ### PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals Lighthouse scores come from Google's public PageSpeed Insights API for your homepage and a few main pages, with LCP, CLS, INP, FCP and TTFB for each. ### Site information

The detective bit. It detects your CMS or framework, analytics tags (GTM, GA4, Meta Pixel), the server header, DNS records (A, MX, TXT), SPF and DMARC, the SSL issuer and expiry date, and domain registration dates through RDAP.

Technical SEO and AI search in one report

People now ask ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews which supplier to call, and those tools read your site much like a crawler does. Clear headings tell them what each section answers. Structured data spells out your name, services and address so they don't have to guess. And llms.txt is a newer plain-text file that points AI tools to your main pages; nobody has promised it changes rankings, but it takes ten minutes to add.

So the same report works as a technical SEO audit and an AI SEO checker. If you want help getting cited by AI tools, our AI SEO services start from a report much like this one.

When to run an audit

Frequently asked questions

Is the SEO audit tool really free?+

It is, with no sign up or email form in the way. You paste a URL, the site audit tool runs, and you get all 28 reports plus the exports. We ran these checks on every first call anyway.

Do you store my website or the audit results?+

We don't. Results stay in your browser, and we do not store the audited URL or results on our server. One thing to know: for the speed scores, page URLs go to Google's public PageSpeed API, since that's where Lighthouse runs. Want a copy? Export the XLSX.

How many pages can the tool crawl?+

500 by default, and up to 2,000 if you change the max pages setting. For a bigger site I'd crawl one section at a time with the depth limit or a custom sitemap.

Will the crawl slow down my website?+

On normal hosting, it shouldn't. If your server is fragile, add a delay between requests and the crawler will go gently. It identifies itself as DWMAuditBot/1.0, so you can spot it in your server logs or allow it through a firewall.

Can I run a free website audit on a competitor's site?+

You can, as long as it's a public website. The crawler only fetches public URLs and blocks private IP addresses, so it can't be pointed at internal networks.

What is llms.txt, and do I need one?+

Not strictly, not yet. It's a plain-text file at the root of your site that lists your main pages for AI tools. No search engine has said it uses the file for ranking, so treat it as a cheap extra. Clean headings and structured data matter more.

Why is my PageSpeed score different every time?+

Because Lighthouse scores move a little between runs. Watch the trend and the Core Web Vitals rather than one number. If LCP is slow on every run, that's your real problem.

Can a website SEO checker replace a paid SEO audit?+

Partly. This tool covers the technical side, and plenty of people fix half their issues from it alone. It can't read your Search Console data, review your Google Business Profile or tell you which fixes will bring enquiries. That needs a person, which is what the free review call is for.
