Local SEO tactics for service businesses

For plumbers, dentists, lawyers, accountants, salons and every other business that serves customers in a specific area, local SEO is one of the highest-return marketing channels available. People searching “near me” or “in [city]” are ready to buy. Here are the ten tactics we use for our clients every week.

1. Complete and Verify Your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile drives the map pack, the three listings that appear above organic results for most local searches. Verify it, choose the most accurate primary category, add secondary categories, list every service, set accurate hours and service areas, and upload real photos of your team, premises and work.

2. Keep Your Name, Address and Phone Number Consistent

Google cross-checks your business details across the web. Your name, address and phone number (NAP) should be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Small differences such as “Street” vs “St” or an old phone number weaken trust.

3. Build a Steady Flow of Reviews

Review count, rating and recency all influence local rankings and click-through. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a short review link or QR code, and reply to every review, positive or negative, within a few days.

4. Create a Page for Each Service

One “Services” page listing everything you do cannot rank for all of them. Give each core service its own page with a clear H1, pricing guidance, FAQs, photos and a call to action. This is often the single biggest ranking improvement for service businesses.

5. Add Genuine Location Pages

If you serve several towns or suburbs, create a page for each important area, with real content: jobs you have done there, local reviews, travel times and area-specific details. Avoid copying the same text with only the town name changed; Google treats that as thin content.

6. Get Listed in the Right Citations

Citations are mentions of your business on directories. Focus on quality: the major platforms in your country (for example Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Yell in the UK, True Local in Australia, Justdial in India) plus the main directories for your industry.

7. Add LocalBusiness Schema Markup

Structured data tells search engines exactly who you are, where you are and when you are open. Add LocalBusiness (or a more specific type such as Dentist or LegalService) schema to your site with your NAP, opening hours, geo-coordinates and links to your profiles.

8. Earn Local Links and Mentions

Links from local news sites, chambers of commerce, suppliers, sponsorships and community events are strong local signals. One relevant local link is often worth more than dozens of generic directory links.

9. Make Your Site Fast and Mobile-Friendly

Most local searches happen on phones, often on the move. Your site should load in under two seconds, show click-to-call buttons and make it easy to get directions or book. A slow site loses the customer even if you rank first.

10. Track Calls, Forms and Direction Requests

Rankings are only a means to an end. Track phone calls, form submissions, WhatsApp clicks and Google Business Profile actions so you know which keywords and pages actually bring in work, then put more effort into what is working.

How Long Does Local SEO Take?

Quick wins such as fixing your Google Business Profile and NAP consistency can move rankings within weeks. Service pages, reviews and links compound over three to six months. The businesses that win locally are the ones that keep doing the basics every month.
