How much does it cost to outsource web development to India in 2026?

Quick answer

Expect roughly USD 2,500 to 9,500 for a small-business website from an Indian agency, and USD 3,500 to 7,500 or more for an online store. Good developers here tend to bill USD 25 to 50 an hour. None of that means much until somebody writes the scope down, and the lowest quote rarely ends up the lowest bill.

We get this a lot from Australia and the UK. Someone has three quotes (a local studio, a freelancer, and us) and wants to know why ours sits in the middle. Fair question. It's the one almost everybody outside India asks before they hire here, and the answers on the internet tend to be either sales pitches or horror stories.

So here's what we'd tell a friend. Real numbers, what pushes them up, the costs nobody mentions on the first call, and the questions that sort a decent Indian team from a risky one.

What do Indian web developers charge per hour?

Most senior people at Indian agencies charge something like USD 25 to 50 an hour. Wisemonk's 2026 outsourcing guide stretches that to USD 25 to 80 and compares it with USD 90 to 150 in the US. When clients forward us quotes from other Indian firms, the numbers look about the same.

Freelancers on the big marketplaces often go lower. Sometimes that's a bargain. Sometimes it's a student fitting your site around exams, and you only find out in week three.

Honestly, though, hourly rates are the wrong thing to compare for a website. A slow developer at USD 20 an hour costs more than a quick one at USD 40. We quote fixed prices for most builds for exactly that reason: you know the number before anyone starts.

What does a typical project cost?

Here's what our own published packages look like for overseas clients. Plenty of other Indian agencies land in a similar range, give or take.

Project Price (USD) What's usually included Typical timeline
Starter business website 2,500 Up to 6 pages on WordPress 3 to 4 weeks
Professional website 5,500 Up to 15 pages, custom UI/UX, blog, schema 5 to 7 weeks
Authority website 9,500 Up to 30 pages, brand identity, custom features 8 to 12 weeks
Launch store 3,500 Shopify or WooCommerce, up to 50 products 4 to 6 weeks
Growth store 7,500 Custom theme, cart recovery, e-commerce SEO 6 to 10 weeks
Custom web app or SaaS MVP Quoted per scope Login, dashboards, integrations 2 to 6 months

The full list, with what's in and out of each, is on our pricing page. Wisemonk's guide quotes USD 3,000 to 8,000 for a small business site and USD 20,000 and up for custom applications, which tells you our range isn't unusual.

Why is the same website quoted at USD 800 and USD 8,000?

Because they aren't the same website. Nine times out of ten the gap comes down to a handful of things, and once you line them up, the quotes start to make sense.

The first is design. A bought theme with your logo dropped in is quick. A design drawn for your business in Figma first, then built, takes far longer, and it shows.

Then there's content. Does somebody write the copy, or are you sending fifteen pages of text yourself? (Most people say "we'll send it" and then don't, for months.)

Integrations add real hours too. A booking system, a CRM, Xero, a payment gateway that isn't Stripe. Each one is a few days, not a few minutes.

And who's actually doing it matters more than people think. A two-person studio and a 200-person outsourcing firm have very different overheads, and very different ideas of what "project manager" means.

What costs do overseas clients forget to budget for?

The build is the first bill, not the last. These are the ones that catch people out:

  • Hosting. A decent managed plan is usually USD 10 to 40 a month. Go cheaper and the site crawls; we see it all the time.
  • Premium plugins, theme licences, Shopify apps. Budget a few hundred dollars a year, and watch for the ones that bill monthly.
  • Maintenance. Someone has to run updates and backups and make the small edits. Find out how long that's free after launch and what it costs after.
  • Content and photos. Stock images are cheap; a proper product shoot isn't.
  • Bank fees. International wires to India can eat more than you'd think, so ask early how they like to be paid.
  • Your time. Feedback and sign-offs don't happen by themselves. Keep a few hours a week free.

How do you avoid getting burned?

When outsourcing goes wrong, it's nearly always the same story. Nobody wrote the scope down. Nobody talked to the client for weeks. And when it all went wrong, the developer had the logins.

So push on those before you sign:

  1. Get the scope in writing: pages, features, and what's left out. A team that won't write it down isn't a team to hire.
  2. Find out how often they'll report back. Ours is a short written update every week, plus a staging link from early on, so you can poke around the half-built site.
  3. Domain, hosting, code, ad accounts: all in your name. Admin logins at launch, not "later".
  4. Pay in stages. Something like a deposit, a payment on design approval and the rest at go-live is normal. Paying 100% up front to someone new is asking for trouble.
  5. Ask for a reference in your country. At the very least, live sites with the client's name on them.
  6. Find out who you'll deal with day to day. If the friendly salesperson vanishes once the deposit clears, that tells you something.

Does the time difference cause problems?

Less than you'd think, if it's planned. India is UTC+5:30, so our 10 AM to 7 PM day lands in the Australian afternoon and the UK morning. US clients usually get an early-morning or late-evening call on our side.

Funny thing is, some people actually like the gap. You send feedback before bed, the changes are waiting when you wake up. Where it hurts is when nobody fixes a regular call time. Sort that out in week one.

Is outsourcing to India worth it for a small business?

Usually, yes, whether you're in Australia, the UK, the US or the UAE. Just hire the way you'd hire anyone local: references, a contract, staged payments. A well-run Indian agency will usually build the same site for a third to a half of a local studio's price, and the work can be just as good.

Where we'd tell you not to bother? If you need someone in the room every week, or your project changes direction every few days, a local team may be worth the extra money. Better to hear that from us now than to find it out halfway through.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to outsource a website to India?+

A small business website from an Indian agency usually costs USD 2,500 to 9,500, depending on pages, design and features. Online stores start around USD 3,500. Freelancers can be cheaper, but check what's included, especially design, content and support after launch.

What is the hourly rate for a web developer in India?+

Experienced developers at Indian agencies typically charge USD 25 to 50 an hour, with specialists going higher. Junior freelancers can be cheaper. For a fixed website project, ask for a fixed quote instead of an hourly estimate.

Is it safe to outsource web development to India?+

It is, if the basics are in writing. Get a written scope, keep the domain and hosting in your name, pay in stages and make sure you receive all logins and source files at launch. Most problems come from skipping those steps, not from the country.

Can I pay an Indian agency in USD, AUD or GBP?+

Many Indian agencies invoice in USD, and some accept other currencies. We quote overseas clients in USD. Ask about payment methods early, because international bank transfer fees can add up.

Who owns the website when the project ends?+

You should own all of it: domain, hosting account, code, content and analytics. Write that into the contract and collect the admin logins at launch.

How long does it take to build a website with an Indian team?+

A simple business site takes 3 to 4 weeks, a larger site 5 to 12 weeks and an online store 4 to 10 weeks. The usual cause of delay is waiting for content and approvals, so agree on dates for those too.
