Small business website design cost depends mostly on who builds it. A DIY builder costs a monthly plan fee plus your own time. Freelancers often quote around $1,000 to $5,000, and local agencies in Australia, the UK and the USA commonly quote $5,000 to $20,000 or more. We're an Indian agency, and our fixed packages run from $2,500 to $9,500.

A plumber in Brisbane, a bookkeeper in Leeds and a dental practice in Ohio all ask us the same question in slightly different accents. How much should a small business website cost? The honest answer is a range so wide it's almost useless, until you split it by who's doing the building.
So this guide splits it four ways, then covers the bills that keep coming after launch and how to tell an affordable quote from a risky one. Fair warning: we're one of the four options (the offshore one).
How much does a small business website cost?
For a typical service business with 5 to 15 pages, expect anything from a few hundred dollars a year on a DIY builder to $20,000 or more from a city agency. Here's where the four main options usually sit, in US dollars.
| Option | Typical upfront cost (USD) | What you keep paying | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify) | Nothing upfront beyond your time | A monthly plan, roughly $15 to $50 for most small business plans, plus apps | Brand-new businesses on a tight budget | Your evenings, generic design, hard to move away later |
| Freelancer | Roughly $1,000 to $5,000 | Hosting, plus their rate for any edits | Simple sites with a clear brief | One person; if they're busy or vanish, you wait |
| Local agency (Australia, UK, USA) | Commonly $5,000 to $20,000 or more | Hosting and often a monthly care plan | Bigger projects, face-to-face meetings | The price, and junior staff doing the actual work |
| Offshore agency (for example, India) | Around $2,500 to $9,500 for a business site | Hosting and maintenance | Owners who want agency quality at a lower price | Time zones and vetting the team properly |
These ranges are wide on purpose. They're the kind of numbers owners tell us they've seen in quotes, not survey data. A studio in central London, Sydney or New York can sit well above them, and a freelancer in a smaller town can sit well below. Quotes in pounds or Australian dollars move around with the exchange rate too, so convert before you compare.
What does an offshore agency like ours charge?
Our overseas prices are fixed packages in USD, so you know the number before anyone starts. The Starter website is $2,500 for up to 6 pages and goes live in 3 to 4 weeks. Professional is $5,500 for up to 15 pages, and Authority is $9,500 for up to 30 pages with brand identity and custom features. Selling online? The Launch store is $3,500 and the Growth store is $7,500.
What's in and out of each one is on our pricing page. If you want the wider picture on hourly rates and how Indian agencies price projects, we've written a separate guide on what it costs to outsource web development to India.
What are the ongoing costs of a small business website?
Budget for a domain, hosting, maintenance and a few paid plugins or apps every year. The build is the biggest single bill. It isn't the last one.
| Running cost | Typical range (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name | About $10 to $25 a year | .com, .com.au and .co.uk all sit roughly here; register it in your own name |
| Hosting | About $10 to $40 a month for decent managed hosting | The cheapest plans are the usual reason a site feels slow |
| Builder or Shopify plan | Roughly $15 to $50 a month on entry plans | Replaces hosting if you're on a hosted platform |
| Premium plugins, themes or apps | A few hundred dollars a year | Shopify apps often bill monthly and add up quietly |
| Maintenance | Varies a lot by what's covered | Updates, backups, security checks and small edits |
| Business email | Billed per user, per month | Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, usually separate from the site |
Maintenance is the line people skip, and the one I'd argue for hardest. A WordPress site that nobody updates will get hacked eventually; it's a matter of when. Ask any quote for a clear maintenance price, what it covers and how many small edits a month are included.
What makes affordable web design for small business safe, and what makes it risky?
Affordable is safe when the price is low because of where the team works, not because work has been cut. Every website needs design, content, building, testing and support. A cheap quote has to drop something, so your job is to find out what.
The safe signs are fairly boring. A written scope that lists pages and features. A fixed price for that scope. The domain and hosting registered to you, from day one. Payments in stages. A licensed theme and plugins (ask; pirated "nulled" ones often arrive with malware inside). A support window after launch. And a team that asks about your customers before it talks about colours.
The risky signs are easy to miss when the number looks good. A price with no page list. "Unlimited revisions" for $500, which usually means a template with your logo dropped in. A request for 100% upfront. Silence on SEO basics, like page titles, redirects from your old site and Google Search Console setup. If you already have a site that brings in enquiries, that last one matters most, and our website redesign service page explains how old URLs should be carried over.
Is the cheapest quote ever the right one? Sometimes. A brand-new business that needs a one-page site and a phone number can start on a builder, and that's sensible. The trouble starts when a growing business buys purely on price and pays for a rebuild two years later.
Does the time difference matter if you outsource website design?
Less than most owners expect, as long as a regular call time is agreed in week one. India runs on IST (UTC+5:30), and our day is 10 AM to 7 PM IST, Monday to Friday.
| Where you are | How our day lines up with yours |
|---|---|
| Australia (east coast) | Our morning is your afternoon, from about 2:30 PM in Sydney, an hour later during daylight saving |
| United Kingdom | Our afternoon is your morning, from 9 AM until about 1:30 PM in London in winter (2:30 PM in summer) |
| USA | No natural overlap, so we book an early-morning call for the East Coast or a late-evening slot on our side for the West Coast |
The gap can work in your favour, too. Send feedback at the end of your day and the changes are often waiting the next morning.
How do you vet an offshore web design team?
Check their work, their people and their paperwork before you pay a deposit. Here's the order I'd do it in.
- Open their own website on your phone. If it's slow, full of spelling mistakes or plainly built from a template, that's what you'll get too.
- Ask for live sites with the client's name on them, then visit those sites yourself. Sites built a year or two ago tell you more than this month's launch.
- Get on a video call with the person who'll actually manage your project, not only the salesperson.
- Ask how they'd handle your market. A UK site needs proper cookie consent; an Australian store needs GST set up; a US store needs sales tax handled, and most need Stripe or PayPal rather than Indian gateways.
- Read reviews, don't just count stars. A handful of detailed, believable reviews says more than a wall of one-liners.
- If you're nervous, start small. A paid landing page or a site audit is a cheap way to see how a team communicates before you hand over the whole build.
What payment terms are normal for an overseas website project?
Staged payments are normal, and you shouldn't pay everything upfront to a team you haven't worked with. A common split is about 40% to start, 40% when you approve the design and 20% at launch, with bigger projects broken into more milestones.
A few more things belong in the contract. The rate for changes outside the agreed scope, so a "quick extra page" doesn't become an argument. Who owns the code, content and design (you, on final payment). And what happens if either side wants to stop halfway. We quote overseas clients in USD; ask any team which payment methods they accept, because international transfer fees vary a lot between a bank wire and the newer money transfer services.
When is a local agency worth the extra money?
When you genuinely need people in the room. If your project needs weekly in-person workshops, or the brief changes every few days, a local team may save you more frustration than it costs. For a straightforward site with a clear brief, most owners don't need city-centre rates. See our web design service if you'd like to compare.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a small business website cost in 2026?+
Roughly $1,000 to $5,000 with a freelancer, commonly $5,000 to $20,000 or more with a local agency in Australia, the UK or the USA, and $2,500 to $9,500 with us as an offshore agency. DIY builders cost a monthly fee plus your time. Running costs like hosting and maintenance come on top.
Is Wix or Squarespace cheaper than hiring a designer?+
At the start, usually, since you pay a monthly plan instead of a build fee. But your time isn't free, and DIY sites often end up generic and hard to move later. For a brand-new business with almost no budget, a builder is a fine place to begin; once the site needs to win enquiries, it's worth getting help.
How much does it cost to outsource website design to India?+
With us, a small business website costs $2,500 to $9,500 as a fixed package, and online stores start at $3,500. Other Indian agencies land in a broadly similar range. Freelancers can be cheaper, but check exactly what's included, especially design, content and support after launch.
What are the monthly costs of running a website?+
For most small business sites, hosting is about $10 to $40 a month, plus a domain at about $10 to $25 a year, plugins or apps, and maintenance. On Wix, Squarespace or Shopify, the plan fee replaces hosting. Ask for maintenance to be priced separately so you can see it.
How long does it take to build a small business website?+
Our Starter sites of up to 6 pages go live in 3 to 4 weeks, and bigger sites take longer. The usual cause of delay is waiting for text, photos and approvals, so agree dates for those as well as for the build.
Is it safe to pay an overseas web designer?+
It is, if you protect yourself the same way you would locally. Get a written scope, pay in stages, keep the domain and hosting in your own name and collect every login at launch. Most bad stories come from skipping those steps rather than from the country involved.
Do I need to be online at the same time as an offshore team?+
Not all day, no. A fixed weekly call plus written updates covers most projects. Our working day overlaps the Australian afternoon and the UK morning, and we book early or late calls for clients in the USA.
